Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is one of those experiences that makes getting up early worth it! Each October, colorful balloons fill the New Mexico sky, bringing together pilots and crews from around the world. Watching the balloons inflate up close, hearing the burners roar and seeing them slowly lift overhead is something photographs can only begin to capture.
Mass Ascension and Special-Shaped Balloons
The morning Mass Ascension is the signature event, with more than 600+ balloons taking off in coordinated waves rather than all at once. As one group rises, another prepares to launch, creating a constantly changing scene across the field and sky.
20% of the balloons are special-shaped balloons add even more personality, with playful characters, and animals. Their complex shapes can make inflation and flying more demanding, so some may stay grounded when conditions aren’t suitable.
How Weather Affects the Balloon Fiesta
Weather plays a major role in every session. Winds above approximately 11½ mph can delay or cancel balloon flights and evening glows, and rain, visibility and other conditions also affect launch decisions. A little flexibility is part of the experience.
Morning Flights and Evening Balloon Glows
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta bills itself as the most photographed event on Earth. Once you see the colors filling the sky, it’s easy to understand why!
💡 Runway Tip: Experience both morning and evening. The morning Mass Ascension and an evening Balloon Night Glow offer completely different experiences. In the morning, balloons rise into the sky. During the evening glow, they remain tethered on the field as their burners illuminate them from within like enormous lanterns.
💡 Runway Tip: Check the event calendar before choosing your dates. Mass Ascensions, special-shape events and evening glows take place on different days. Plan around the events you most want to see, and check official updates for weather-related changes.
Planning Your Hotel Stay and Transportation
💡 Runway Tip: Book your hotel as far ahead as possible. Hotels are in high demand during Fiesta, and rates can be expensive. Consider staying a little farther from the park and using the official Park & Ride service. Check its operating days and departure locations before booking, and purchase transportation tickets in advance.
Staying Comfortable at the Fiesta
💡 Runway Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. You’ll spend plenty of time walking and standing while exploring the launch field. Early mornings can be chilly, even when the afternoon warms up so dress in layers.
💡 Runway Tip: Consider the Chasers’ Club. For a more comfortable visit, this upgrade is a worthwhile investment. It includes admission, guaranteed seating on a private outdoor patio, catered food, beverages and dedicated restrooms. Morning coffee and hot cocoa are especially welcome during those early starts. Parking is separate and around $20.
Whether you’re watching balloons drift across the morning sky or standing among their glowing shapes after sunset, the Fiesta gives you plenty of reasons to pause, look up and enjoy the moment.
